Tarot Decks

Here is a listing of decks that I've used and my thoughts on them. Decks marked with an asterisk are not available for readings.

Renaissance Tarot Deck*: This deck by Brian Williams is a lustrous gem based in a combination of the Italian Renaissance, Greek and Roman mythology. It is a very subtle deck that draws off of the occult traditions of Europe during the Renaissance. I have found that this gilded deck is excellent for readings focused upon finances.

Vampire Tarot*: Natalie Hertz's artistic eye is clearly of a modernist trend. That said, her treatment of the Gothic themes in this deck are fairly traditional. Vampires are generally creatures of a highly sexualized nature within the folklore and mythology.

Hertz's handling of the imagery of this deck presents a very stylized set of vampires that bring to mind the waif thin models of the runway. Artistically, this was not my favorite deck to use. For readings, it is a passable deck. I was neither impressed or disappointed by it. Visually, it seemed to me that all of the cards blended together and made for a rather bland experience.

Tarot of the Witches*: This deck from Fergus Hall was featured in a James Bond movie. It's bold colors and high contrast images must have made it quite easy to pop up on the film. Visually, this is an acquired taste. If you are a person who enjoys surrealism and modern art, you will probably feel that this deck trends a little to the conservative side but is none the less a pleasant experience.

If you're not a fan of the less traditional styles of art, then this is most definately not the deck for you. It is in many ways, an aggressive assault upon one's eyes. I may be letting my personal feelings regarding the artistic style slip a bit, but I can say this, it is probably one of the most vibrantly colored decks I've ever seen. For readings, it proved surprisingly good. This deck is excellent for reading upon serious matters, even though sometimes the cards can give muddied perspectives on matters of emotion.

The Witches Tarot: From Ellen Cannon Reed and Martin Cannon, this deck is beautifully illustrated. Drawing it's imagery from Wicca and modern Witchcraft, this is a very earthy and yet highly spiritual deck.

Most of the decks used are available at most books stores and major retailers.
